Those Medellin' Kids!

Pic Tallent took at Hillswalk

Dear people,

How are you all? This week we worked hard and it seemed on some days like we couldn't do anything (it snowed on us for a whole day, etc), but it was good because we were doing the Lord's work. And wouldn't you know it, we did see miracles; one investigator prayed for the first time with us and looked in the Book of Mormon for answers to his problems and another investigator came to sacrament meeting. We my not always know what we're doing, but something is happening from it!
Me covered with snow

Saturday we had our last Kids Eikaiwa for a while. Reason being that Inagi Shimai who is the mastermind of it all has a new job that will take away from her being able to work on it with us. And it is a bit strange for just 4 dudes to teach these kids and their moms. So we had a big kids English party! We sang just about every children's song and nursery rhyme known to man, played games, and ate some goodies that Inagi Kyoudai brought back from America. It was fun, but sad that we won't see them for a while. Those kids are so cute! Working with them has taught me a bit about kids and being a parent/teacher someday. We invited them all to continue learning English from the missionaries personally whenever they'd like. The parents are all so nice.

I was touched when the older kids walked up to us and said, "Thank you!" to us. It was pretty neat to see that these kids really like us even though we switch every six weeks.

We also got to watch a broadcast devotional from Tokyo where Elder Nelson of the 12 spoke. He talked about 15 gospel topics you can explain simply to your friends. He invited all the missionaries to stand including the ones far away. There were only 4 of us and 12 other members in the church in Nonami, but we stood anyway haha. Then Elder Nelson talked about missionaries for a minute saying that we "desire to help others have better lives" and that we are fulfilling a prophesy to gather Israel. It was pretty cool hearing it put that way. We don't always think of it like that, but it reminds me of why I'm really here.
Me being cool

I forget sometimes why I came here in the first place. But I remember when I see my pictures and letters and remember the missionaries and the Conway ward. And the scripture that says "If ye have desires to serve God, ye are called to the work" (D&C 4:3).

Well y'all this week we will get training on using iPads for dendo! We are looking forward to seeing this hastening of the work. Speaking of, you can now see a news story of elder Ballard's visit to Japan on https://www.lds.org/church/news/ so check it out if you have a slack moment.

Love you all and wish you all a good week! Please write me sometime too, I'd love to hear from more of you!

So You Wanna Be a Hero?

Samurai hats!

Helloooooooo!

Well not sure what to say this week. Nothing to top last time. Just a lot of rain. One cool thing happened that I want to share though.

We had a great opportunity to bring out priest, Satoki to a lesson with us. Our investigator wasn't home so we took him dendoing with us instead. he just watched, but seemed to get a kick out of it. We were actually able to get a potential investigator. Then his mom picked us up and we had dinner at their house. It was cool.

This experience brought back some memories of when I was in Satokis position, many times. I remember going housing with Elder Olsen and Elder Brimhall when I was 17 and how we got a yakusousha while housing, and the time I almost drove Elder Phillips and Elder Willie out of the area. Only in this situation, I was the missionary.

What made me want to be a missionary in a long run, was the Conway ward missionaries. They became my heroes. Now I was in there shoes. Kind of nervous, but it was fun. I think we were able to build a stronger relationship with this young man. It was pretty cool for me though to see in perspective that I had become what my missionaries were to me.

We also did Zone Conference and stuff. Lots of good things there about how we need to do the things we aren't. So we are gonna keep getting better. Sometimes I feel really weak, like I'm not good at dendo etc. but if I trust in the Lord I know we can accomplish our goals.

Well not many pictures this week either, maybe next time. I love yall. Take care and have a good one!

Love,
Watkins

Transfer 10: That Special Feeling

Izumi Shimai got baptized!

Izumi Shimai and Toki Shimai

Izumi Shimai and Ichihashi Shimai

It was another Spirit filled weekend as the other Elder's investigator got baptized! She is a young lady who was studying with the sisters before and has been coming to church ever since August. That's a long time. She was baptized by her boyfriend who is from New Zealand, so he did the baptism in English. She speaks English too so it was cool.

This was my first time going to a convert baptism in Japan. We had no idea what to do to set up haha. We cleaned the font last Monday before Elder Tanner left for Yokkaichi the next day and our new teammate elder Nilsson came.

Everyone was in a fluster before the baptism, it was like a wedding was about to happen! But when the time came, we were able to relax and remember the covenants we ourselves made at baptism. As we sang the opening hymn, "Families can be together forever", I began to feel that special feeling that I remember feeling on many occasions in the chapel in the Conway South Carolina Ward. It was the Spirit bearing witness to me that we are all children of God. And I felt, in that chapel in Nonami, love everywhere from everyone for this young woman who they've become friends with and helped for the past several months as she entered into those waters and chose to follow the Savior. And then we were privileged to hear her testimony, of how she may not understand quite everything, but she knows it's true. You can see the difference. And there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

On Sunday I felt that feeling again as I was honored for my first time that I can recall, to stand in the circle of priesthood holders and fellow elders as her boyfriend also gave her the gift of the Holy Ghost.
No idea what I'm doing

And another miracle; Elder Tallent and I met a man this week who was interested in coming to church and said we could come back and visit him. Then unexpectedly he came to the baptismal service and was able to meet many of the members and had a chance to feel the spirit. He said this was different from his image of a christian church, but he would like to come by again sometime. Pretty cool you could say.

Well this still wasn't "my" baptism, but that is not what's important, the important thing is that it was her baptism. And now another daughter has entered the gate leading back home to Heavenly Father. For me, I just have to help the other people find their way there, so this transfer we are going to work harder and teach and testify so we can bring at least one soul closer to Christ.

Alright you guys, have a wonderful week! I always include you people in my prayers.
Love,
Elder Watkins :)
